Thucycdides and Spring on the way

I am not reading according to plan, but I am not exactly way behind schedule either.

I have still not read the Voltaire which was to be done by now, and I am behind on my required allotment of Wodehouse. I can catch up....and I will. I am a work in progress.

Here's the good news...
All running now and all the way to the marathon in October can now be done first thing in the morning, because the sun is up early enough for me to get out before kids show up wantingto be fed . That is such great news for me!

Warm weather is not here in the slightest, but it's coming! That's even more good news for running. No more risk of frostbite or slippage on ice.

David, my outstanding firstborn, is reading Thucydides with me.
We have a daily reading schedule and a set of awesome discussion questions, some of which I will post once we have weeded out the non-essential ones.

We have done lots of good background study of Athens and Sparta and even the Persians, and we are enjoying feeling well informed as we dig in.

So, anybody who wants to develop a nerdly superior intelligence about ancient Greece, come and join us. Lori from Boise and your excellent sons, are you out there?
This is not the copy we are reading. We have the Penguin Classic with the naked guy on the front, but this is a family blog, so it must be the tamer cover.

It's also available combined with some references to Herodotus in comic book form , as you can see HERE. If any of you read it, I would love to hear what you think. We're not permitted to do any of the 100 books in comicbook form here at this house.

I have to say that both David and I enjoyed Herodotus more, but Thucycdides is growing on me.

I can actually say I read this one -- in my university days. I remember thinking it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be -- but that's ALL I remember. {Sigh} I remember so little of the good books I've read (even last week!). One might ask, then, what's the point of me reading?

But I do so enjoy it at the time!

I marvel at what you're accomplishing, Missy! You go, girl! And David -- you go, too! I'm proud of you both! :)

I'm working on the Landmark Thucydides, Missy. But the boys, sorry to say, have been assigned to read Herodotus right now for their Ancient Lit. class - (teacher chose that and nixed the Thucydides). I'm not too far along in the book yet, but knowing that David's working on it, I'll have to keep plugging away so as to not be out done by a teenaged boy!!

Lori,
Herodotus is so interesting!
We all loved that book!
I will e-mail you about this book.
I am off to sleep now, I think you are here on the blog somewhere?
