Avast ye scurvy dogs....

I read 300 pages of Moby Dick almost straight through. It so thoroughly removed me from my immediate realities that I almost missed my connecting flight in Denver.
Then, I addressed my neighbor on the plane in what sounded a bit like...... pirate talk. I comfort myself with the observation that he registered nothing, and I was the only one who seemed to be aware of my slip-up.
All the same, I'm stepping back from Melville for a couple of days. I'll just finish up on the plane home, as there's PLENTY of time for that.

Now I'm halfway into The Gathering. Sometimes I wish that so many of these people who were told in school that they had writing talent didn't also have an expert's insight of life in a warped family. I guess that a family is a neat package in which to draw out all kinds of sorrow and selfishness and evil so that they are easily understood.

The Gathering is really a woman's book. There are so many exquisite observations of life as a wife, daughter, mother and sister. But it is not for everyone. At lunch today I told Jon that, even though it's a book-club book, he would find it a waste of time.
